STILL LIFE WITH ARTIST’S TOOLS BY UNKNOWN ARTIST (2000s) GIFT Simons enrolled in the CorcoranA sophisticated modernist still life with painters tools and a notebook. Thick patches of oil paint have been applied with brushes and spatulas, and a somewhat regular grid has been carved into the resulting impasto surface. This fracturing of the visual plane produces something of a semi cubist effectwhich emphasizes fragmentation rather than abstraction. The biomorphic form of the painters palette straddles the frameworkmaybe in winsome defiance.
